About me

This supervisor has been approved to provide supervision under the ACCESS TO SUPERVISION PROJECT.

As a parent/carer, I support my children who have lived through a range of complex challenges ranging from mental health to childhood cancer. I believe that these experiences continually provide me with a unique understanding of the complexity of our health care systems and services from a family/carer perspective. The journey of caring has led me to work in a lived experience role as a Family/Carer Consultant, but began in a community mental health waiting room when I responded to an invite to ‘Have your say’ in the mental health program. I started attending a mental health advisory committee. This experience opened up my world to meet other carers, who had similar experiences to myself. The value of support from others who have had to navigate their way through the mental health system, while given the opportunity to advocate for issues close to my heart brought meaning, a sense of purpose and some healing. I love to spend time with my family, with random ‘games nights’ in our household. I also enjoy time outside in the garden, listening to music, attempting to learn African drumming and knitting great long scarves for anyone who wants one!

My experience

I have been employed as a Family/Carer Consultant for over 4 years. In my work, I have the privilege of meeting and working with lived experience colleagues, and supporting carers who support their loved ones from all ages and stages in life. I provide both peer support, facilitate carer events and advocacy (individual and systemic). In addition, I managed lived experience led projects, promoting co-design principles and have a good working knowledge of mental health services within the public health sector. I believe that I have a good understanding of the challenges that carer lived experience workers face on a day to day basis and at a governance level. As I intermittently step up to senior consultant level, attending and advising at governance committees, I experience a diverse range of issues and complexity regarding mental health services. It is integral within the role of leadership to understand your own vulnerabilities, mistakes, ability to reflect and appreciate diversity and wisdom in others.
I work on a variety of external and state-wide committees both within my service and with my sector peers. As a passionate advocate for the lived experience workforce, I am keen to support the workforce through the provision of supervision services. As an avid listener, I am curious about exploring ways to improve and strengthen our practice to ensure continuous engagement, growth and rewarding outcomes for both the supervisee, the families/carers that they support and their work environment.

My approach to supervision

My approach is to work from a strengths based approach, to encourage a creative and collaborative space in order to promote professional and personal growth. There would be a trial period of determining if the supervisee is comfortable working with me, what goals and aspirations they have and if my style is the best fit for them. I believe that we often have the answers to burning issues within us, and simply need the space to talk them through with prompting and questions that encourage curiosity. Ultimately, listening and reflecting on our practice opens up our understanding of ourselves and our environment, paving the way to better practice and a broader understanding of ourselves.
