Hello! I'm Emma! Warm, passionate, empathetic lived experience leader.
My journey has many twists and turns, experiences, learnings and successes. I have lived a life that has included experiences of early childhood trauma, substance use and addiction, the criminal justice system, mental illness and the involuntary mental health treatment space and the recovery journey, suicidality, self-harm and of course working in the mental health sector in lived experience roles, leadership roles and direct client work. In addition to my lived experience role spanning 5 years, I have worked in family services, youth mental health, and am now currently in the community health sector as a Lived Experience Lead. I am working toward finishing my social work degree, in addition to post grad study in mental health.
Animals were key to my recovery , therefore I have a passion for the use of animals in my work. I am certified in Animal assisted therapy and interventions and was able to utilise my beautiful canine as a therapy dog. I also successfully implemented a therapy chicken program during my work at Neami which led to a chapter in a book!
I am a white, queer, woman, mother, nature lover am passionate advocate for inclusion and acceptance.

My experience

I have 5 years experience as a Peer Worker at Neami National in a youth mental health residential recovery program. I feel incredibly grateful for my experience at Neami where I was provided with many opportunities to grow and learn as well as being provided with the foundations to set me on my journey working in the sector.
I then moved into the family services sector as a family support practitioner, then into a leadership role at the Lilydale youth hub where I led a team of 15 social workers, case managers, peer workers, counsellors, therapists and allied health staff.
Supervision is a passion of mine and I am experienced in providing Consumer Perspective Supervision.

My approach to supervision

I see supervision as key to the work we do and developing ourselves and our practice. We can all benefit from having another mind to help us make sense of the impact of this work on us, regardless of our level of experience. I believe supervision is a space to reflect on what we "hold" for others and how we can grow and learn and what we "hold" for ourselves. A space to reflect on the powerful emotions our work may bring up and the impact this may have on us in our work and personal lives.
I intend to create a formal relationship between supervisee and supervisor with agreed upon structure to sessions focusing on reflection, your practice and self awareness, supporting you in your role, any dilemmas or challenges that arise utilising the unique values, principals and expertise that comes from consumer work.
